Car Date Night

Oklahoma is at its best again. We are supposed to be watching the horizon...and the news...for bad weather. Did I mention that tornado season can give you some serious anxiety problems? No true storm shelter, and a closet for 5 people..yep it kind of freaks me out.

Last night was the start of our three day weather watch this week, and it was actually very eventful. We actually lost power for about 3 hours! With all of the wind and hail you would think that power loss was common. Nope, the last time we lost power our 3 1/2 year old was under 6mo. Power loss with kids is always eventful.

Out of our children he was the most alarmed by this. He kept asking us to turn the lights on, and when we said they weren't working he would put on his drama king voice and say "oh no, that's terrible!" Bedtime was early in our house for little ones.

What do mom and dad do in the dark at 6:30pm? We made our own drive-in date night in the car. Oh yes, be jealous, we watched MIB3 on the dvd in the van. We have an outlet in the car, and tried to hook up our laptop in the house, but technical difficulties prevented this, so car it is. BBQ Baked chips in hand, my drink and his drink. We had a date. I wonder if he even realizes that we had a date at home? I have mentioned using some home date ideas and he didn't think that it would be as "good" as an out of the home date.

It was actually my husband's idea, and it was awesome! I admit it was born out of my comment of," What are we going to do? I have never liked power outages, I get bored." I'm as bad as the kids...What awesome, unplanned adventure have you had lately?

To Nickname, or not to Nickname...

I never had an offical "nickname" as a child. I got called by my twin sister's name, or "twin", anad "half dime" or "Nickle" by my papaw. But, nothing that could be deemed a consistent nickname. I guess I'm just plain Nicole!

But, as my children are growing, I am starting to call them things in my head. No, nothing mean. Just little things that describe their personality and remind me of them.

My oldest is my Fire Cracker! He's 3, and 46 lbs and 45in of pure activity! He has a bit of a temper, and is the king of throwing himself on the floor and using all of his 46 lbs to his advantage. When he stops you STOP!

My middle, and second, son is my Sassy Pants. Yes, sassy pants, meaning that he back talks more and far earlier than his brother ever did. If I say "no", he screams it back at me. If I don't let him have that pen he found in his daddy's uniform pocket, you would think that I had hurt him. If he doesn't want it, he throws it!

My daughter is our Pepper! This one is part family decided because of her middle name which sounds like "cayenne", and other part current personality. At 6 mo old she can go from sweet to spicy in no time! You know, sugar and spice and everything nice? Heavy on the spice part! I guess we know what our little girl is made of.

Someone told me that she just loves budding personalities. I have to admit that I love them too. Not only becuase they are my babies, but because I am seeing things that make them different. And these little names that I call them in my head, may become their nicknames very soon.

My babies have spirit.....yes they do.....my babies have spirit..... how bout you?

Our little artist

Usually I'm very supportive of our 2yr old's creativity...today I am shaking my head! Let me start by saying that he can be very sneaky, not in a truly naughty sense, but sneaky nonetheless. And when given the right tools hr gets the job done to his satisfaction!

So, we went to the BX today, and the base is having fire prevention month and they were giving away toys and such to the kids. He got a hat, and a cup, and crayons with his coloring book....maybe you can see where this is going? We walked around, and I thought my husband had stuck the crayons in the diaper bag, and I had forgotten about them.

On the way home nothing was out of the ordinary, his seat is behind mine, and we have a compact car. You would think that one of us might have seen something....daddy had even talked to him at some stoplights because he likes to try to roll the window down...again, nothing was out of the ordinary!

I went into the house and my husband followed with getting the kiddos out, and then I hear,"hunee, do you want to know what our son did?"....we had just gotten home, there was literally NOTHING he could have done in the house...note: in the house! My husband came back to where I was and said,"did you know what was in his fire house cup?", and I said I thought it was empty....my husband told me he had left the crayons in the cup, when he handed it to our son in the car..see where I'm going now? He had decided the panel next to him in the car was not colorful enough, and had remedied the problem. See?...he got the job done with the tools given!

All I can do is laugh and shake my head!...I'm not a person who is so stuck on stuff that I'm going to punish him for something that was at least partially my fault. He's a child, and today he did exactly what they do. The only thing worse than lack of creativity is making them scared to be so...I admit the car is not the right place, but it happened. Life will go on...we will wash it off the best we can...and we will choose to laugh instead of be angry with him, because he acted his age!

Teach your children, but don't punish them for things that you has a part in...that's the stuff that makes them think you were a jerk later on...oh, and its JUST A CAR!

Sleeping Beauty

My husband was asleep on the loveseat and I woke him...or thought i did...and told him we needed to get ready for church. Hr fell asleep again, so I woke him. He stood up, followed me into the kitchen and here's what happened....

Hubby: "gotta get up or I will fall back to sleep"

Me:"ok"

Hubby: kisses me and says," or maybe I just needed a kiss from my beautiful wife....I'm sleeping beauty."

Me: "does that make me the prince?"

Hubby:"YES!"

Oh how he makes me laugh some days :-)

Ttyl,
"the prince"....for today

FFS-Whats mine is yours

Our little man wasn't an "only child" very long. Some have said that it wasn't long enough, but I feel that it was just right. And, this story seems to prove my point.

Our baby man was very upset, and I couldn't get to him. So, our little man took his binkie out of his mouth and tried to stick it in baby man's mouth. Now, mind you, little man is only 18 months old, and LOVES his binkie! Then, he tried to make the swing rock for baby man by pushing it....HOW CUTE IS THAT?

I am constantly amazed by how our boys react to eachother. This type of acceptance is thought of as rare, and astonishing, for babies so young. I just think that our oldest was meant to be a nurturer and he's taking his cues of how to treat his brother from me and my hubby, and how we treat him.

I know that our next baby may get a much different reception from its brothers, but I hope that our little man teaches our baby man well on how to be an awesome, and loving, big brother!

FFS- Giving "kisses"

Our oldest son is 17mo. We both agreed to teach him to give kisses on the cheek to prevent future issues with him accosting little girls ;-). Well, I've been trying to get him to give me kisses by pointing at my cheek and saying, "give Momma a kiss". And a couple days ago he did...HE POKED ME IN THE CHEEK!
He thinks that he gives kisses with his finger...guess we accomplished our goal...he will just poke girls instead of mouthing them in the future.

FFS-"textacular misprint"

This was a conversation had between me and my husband today:

HUBBY: were u born?
ME: No, I was hatched out of an egg
HUBBY: This is for you passport paperwork hun, I'm not playing around
ME: U asked me IF I was born, not WHERE, and I didn't know u were filling out paperwork, I thought u were being funny.

He called me later, and by then he was laughing about it too.

For Funnies' Sake-FFS

I'm going to start keeping track of funny things that go on in our daily life...it may be a joke, or just a small conversation that was had..but I would like to make you laugh too! So, look for "FSS" in the title for you laugh. It may not be everyday but I bet it will be worth it :-)
